Presidential Election 2002

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On the last day of electioneering it just remains for me to thank the other two candidates for joining in a most professional election campaign. It has been greatly helped by an efficient AOA communications machine and hard work by the staff and volunteers.

This election has been solely about issues rather than personalities. The Membership will have made their choice and we will know within the week what your choice has been.

Irrespective of your preferred candidate, it is imperative for your contract, your career and your family that you continue to support your Association and the new democratically elected President.

The best opportunity for us to change our future for the better is to use the system we've got - the system that has served us well since the HKAOA was founded in 1963. Against great odds, our Association continues to defend your contract, your profession and the long-term interests of your Company.

To do that the new President and Committee need your  support. Please continue to support your elected President and your Association.

Best regards

Presidential Election 2002

Ladies and Gentlemen,

With only 2 weeks to go until midnight on 31st July, there's been a flurry of activity. On Monday, both Peter and Phil put out summaries of their Manifestos and platforms.

Phil summarised his position as trying to offer the chance to fully explore dialogue by dropping Contract Compliance, the Recruitment Ban and any Public Relations work.

Peter summarised his position by saying that beneficial negotiations would take place, which would lead to the resolution of this industrial dispute, putting the troubles of the past behind us and moving forward to enjoy long term careers.

My position is similar in that we all want a negotiated solution - where "we" refers to the pilots and not to the current management. We've been trying to negotiate in good faith with management for years, but they have another agenda.

I've amplified this in my interview with Shelley Catherine on the AOA News Network (ANN). A transcript is here, and  the QuickTime file is here.

Best regards

Presidential Election 2002

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Four weeks into the campaigning - at the weekend about 80 Members had a chance to meet Phil and I under the guidance of "referee" Al Graham. Here is the video of the debate.

Following the debate, Phil put out some comms and my concerns are covered in my Mid Campaign Message.

Best regards

Presidential Election 2002

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Three weeks into the campaigning, the votes are coming in and the debating continues.

Someone's "Another View" has been contested and here are the arguments.

The video manifestos have been well received. However, not everyone is techno-wired so here is a transcript of the points I made on video.

There was a slight faux pas on the video - Phil had Peter's name in the caption. For the avoidance of all doubt, Phil is the good looking antipodean on second and Peter is the other good looking antipodean on third.

 Best regards

Presidential Election 2002

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Two weeks into the campaigning there are a couple of significant events:

  1. The ballot papers have been distributed to your mail box. Don't forget you only get one form. Lose it or misuse it - you don't get another!

  2. A video showing the candidates' issues is on its way to your home address. This is a first for our Association, and it can be viewed online here.

One person summed up this election quite well. He said that this election is not so much about personalities but it is a classic choice of issues. That's democracy in action.

One fear that seems recurrent is "Will this election split the union"?

At the moment, that's not a problem because all we're doing is voting on issues right now. However, if people choose to leave because they didn't vote for the next President, then you can safely bet on one thing: management will have the last laugh!

 Best regards

Presidential Election 2002

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year there are 2 other candidates vying for the position of HKAOA President - Peter and Phil.

This promises to be an important and well-fought campaign. As before, I shall upload items of interest on this website as they occur. The previous election (2000) issues are still as relevant today as they were before; please read them here.

Campaigning starts in earnest with the issue of the ballot papers this week. From now on you can expect this to be the place to find the truth, sans broccoli,

 Best regards
