| Ted is someone whom I trust and respect and
he is not "my opponent". As I've said, I'm not running against
Ted, I am running FOR the position of AOA President. I had made that
decision before Ted had finally decided to run for a 3rd term.
I have included his manifesto to ensure "fair play".

Presidential Election 2000
Ladies and Gentlemen:
For the last number of years we as an Association have not had an actual
election for the office of President. There are two candidates for the
position of President for the upcoming year, myself and Capt. Nigel
Demery. The mechanics of the election to be held will be sent to you
shortly.
I would like to give you my reasons for seeking re-election at this time
and some idea of where I feel we should be going in the future.
Firstly, I have been your President now for almost two years and feel that
during this time I have developed a good working relationship with, and
won the respect of, the Management of the FOP's department. The
importance of being able to deal with management on a professional level
cannot be underestimated.
Without your support and the hard won respect we now enjoy, many of our
initiatives would have been brushed aside. What are some of those items
that we have accomplished? Looking back over the last year, and in spite
of tremendous pressure, we managed to gain a scope clause to protect our
working conditions, we managed to start the undoing of ASL, we managed to
negotiate a legally binding collectively bargained CoS, and we are a
stronger, more cohesive Association than ever before in our history.
There are still other items coming to fruition from our efforts and they
are, the granting of Time for Association Duties so that we can return to
regular OPS/AOA meetings starting this month, the agreement for office
space to be provided at Cathay City is to be signed soon, Rostering talks
appear to be near completion, and we have negotiated a number of changes
to improve our CoS to be ratified at the EGM in July.
You, the General Committee and I, working together as a team, have
accomplished all of these items. In the near future I am planning a
meeting with the DFO to discuss a pay and provident fund proposal and I am
planning a meeting with the DCA to discuss items of mutual interest as
well as CAD 371.
Secondly, I have during my tenure as President made significant changes to
the way our Association functions and I have started the ground work for a
total restructuring of the HKAOA which will make us more efficient, more
effective, more powerful and will bring us inline with the great ALPA's of
the World. I have also insisted on sending as many of our General
Committee Members as possible to IFALPA training courses. This initiative
has innumerable benefits for us and allows us greater latitude when it
comes to negotiating with the Company. As your President I have also
pushed us into the electronic age of office equipment, with purchase of
the LaserFiche filing system amongst other things.
Thirdly, armed with the experience and the knowledge I have gained over my
27 years in the airline industry, plus the backing of my family and the
General Committee, I believe I am the right man to lead our Professional
Association for the next year. I believe my strength, my integrity, my
commitment, and my honesty have attracted some of our best Members to our
General Committee. Our present Committee is a strong diverse group of
individuals which under my leadership has come together as a very
effective team and I must say I have had the pleasure of leading them
through many interesting debates.
Lastly, I have done my utmost to make us the Profession Association that
you expect us to be. I feel it is our Professionalism that has put us in
good stead and bodes well for us in the future. Where do I see the future
going? As mentioned at the forums held over the last two months I have a
dream of a united, strong and effective Association. An Association of
unified Professional pilots in Hong Kong. An Association that can
effectively safe guard the rights and working conditions of its Members
both industrially and politically. An Association with imagination that
can put forward new ideas to improve its Members' rewards whilst still
maintaining corporate profitability. An Association aware of the needs
of the Company, for without a healthy work environment and a profitable
Company there will be no future for us here.
Without your support and my guidance we would not have gained the numerous
accomplishments listed so far, nor will we be in a position to reap the
benefits of the seeds that have been sown. I am asking for your support
to make these things happen. Together as a team we can, and will,
progress our case forward for Flight Safety, Lifestyle and Remuneration.
The time has come upon us now to decide who we want to lead our
Association for the next year, please vote in favour of my re-election.
Ted Pleavin
